Professor Chan has a broad research interest and has published broadly in many topics such as entrepreneurship, innovation, strategy, sustainability, creative, cultural, and tourism sectors management, industry policy, energy (renewable) policy, industrial organisation, urban cluster and gentrification. He has an extensive international collaboration network and experience conducting fieldwork research in Europe, Africa, China, and Southeast Asia.

His research on the evolution of policy and industrial structure in the energy sector is based at the Energy Policy Research Group at the University of Cambridge. Prof. Chan also has 20 years of experience in the energy and environmental industries, holding various senior positions. He has also worked in multiple roles such as PI, Co-I or project manager, on more than fifteen research projects funded by governments and industry, including from the European Commission, China and Malaysian governments.

Professor Chan conducts research in clean technology, e-commerce, creative and cultural, and tourism and hospitality sectors in the UK, Europe, China, and other countries in Asia, contributing to the theoretical understanding of international entrepreneurship, entrepreneurship orientation, entrepreneurship ecosystems, innovation diffusion, innovation ecosystems, industrial life cycles, resource-based views, and sustainability.

PhD Supervisions

Professor Chan welcomes applications for doctoral study in related fields, particularly sustainability, circular economy, strategy, innovation, entrepreneurship, industrial cluster and ecosystems, and in the creative industries development and policies (games, animation, anime, ceramics), cultural (heritage) sector, green sectors, tourism and hospitality sector, and in emerging economies (China, Asia, Africa).

Professor Chan has three successful PhD completions. He is currently supervising three PhD students and has examined 11 PhD theses/vivas for UK- and international-based universities.
